Lectures:

At the heart of the program is a well-balanced series of lectures in theology, spirituality and pastoral ministry. Institute presenters hold high academic distinction, and are personally noted for their Christian lives, their intelligence and their ability to communicate well with priests. Readings complement the lectures. There are no papers or exams.

Prayer life and liturgy:

The Vatican II Institute is based on the belief that daily personal prayer is essential to living out one's priestly commitment. Sessions on prayer and spiritual life, as well as an environment conducive to prayer, support daily celebration of the Eucharist and other prayer experiences. Trained spiritual directors are available for individual direction. A directed retreat or an option of another retreat experience is part of each session.

Community life:

Because of the close association with other priests and the amount of free time at the Institute, an exceptional degree of friendship and camaraderie can develop. To help both personal and interpersonal growth, there will be weekly small group meetings, an opportunity for individual work with a staff counselor, and adequate recreation time, on or off the grounds.

Recreation:

The grounds provide recreational facilities: paths for walking, bicycling and jogging, swimming pool, tennis courts and an outdoor basketball court. There is a fully equipped exercise gym on campus as well. There will be time off each week, affording opportunity for visits to the surrounding golf courses and other Bay Area recreational sites. Each month there will be at least one longer break to enable participants to enjoy the beauty of the area. There is also approximately a week to travel or, if a participant wishes, to read or rest.
