After a short illness, Father Gene Konkel died September 14, 2012, the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, at his home at Saint Patrick’s Seminary & University at approximately 1PM. He was 81 years of age.
Gene was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Elizabeth [Paczocha] and John Konkel, and grew up there with his sister Eleanor “Dolly,” and his brother, Richard, who have both preceded him in death. Ordained for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee in 1957, he held graduate degrees from Catholic University and from Marquette, and was admitted into the Society of Saint Sulpice in 1959. Father Gene taught at seminaries in Baltimore, Louisville, Kentucky, Honolulu, and until its closing following the Loma Prieta earthquake, Saint Joseph’s College in Mountain View. Gene was best known, however, for his ministry for more than 35 years as spiritual director at Saint Patrick’s Seminary & University, and for his connection to the Vatican II Institute in Menlo Park, where he served as its Director from July 1, 1976 until June 30, 2002.
