LIBRARY TECHNICAL ASSISTANT

PART-TIME / TEMPORARY / NON-EXEMPT

15-20 HOURS PER WEEK; $15.00/hr

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Library Technical Assistant (LTA) is a seasonal paraprofessional position which supports the librarians in overall library function. This support includes, but is not limited to, assisting patrons in basic reference, technology, and circulation of materials, preservation and processing of the collection, and database management. The LTA may also be given specific projects of a defined scope (see responsibilities). As a member of the library staff, the LTA may also open and close the library and shares responsibility for the cleanliness and presentation of the facility. When classes are in session, the LTA works alongside the Seminarian Library Team (SLT), the library’s work study program.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

Reports to the Library Manager.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Processes new materials being added to the collection and discarded materials being removed from the collection.
  • Ensures that the book processing area is stocked and organized.
  • Establishes library-level standards for processing materials in consultation with the librarians.
  • Circulates materials borrowed by patrons, maintains patron circulation accounts, and keeps statistics of circulation activity.
  • Assists patrons with access and use of computers and other library technologies.
  • Provides basic directional reference services for patrons.
  • Assists librarians with acquisitions through logging invoices and purchase orders.
  • Performs retroactive copy cataloging of library materials as part of a long-term migration project.
  • Checks material donations against current library holdings.
  • Logs current and past journal issues into database of holdings.
  • Other Library related responsibilities as designated by the Library Manager.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

This is a temporary, non-exempt position with a flexible schedule between Monday through Friday, with the possibility of some weekend and evening shifts.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Associate Degree or equivalent library certification required;
  • Previous work experience in academic or public libraries desirable;
  • Good attention to detail is essential as accuracy is critical to the success of this position;
  • Must be a self-starter and able to work independently as well as a part of a team in a collegial environment;
  • Must be able to assume responsibility and accomplish goals with little supervision;
  • Demonstrate understanding of and respect for Catholic faith, doctrine, and culture.
EQUIVALENCE:

15-20 hours per week, temporary, non-exempt position
