Message from the President-Rector frbudrector

It is a great honor for me to serve as the 16th President/Rector of St. Patrick's Seminary & University. The mission of this venerable institution has remained constant over the course of its history; namely, to form priests according to the heart of Jesus Christ and worthy of God's holy Church. This mighty work requires the active collaboration of all committed Catholic Christians, including our wonderful faculty and staff and all those in the wider community who care about the future of the priesthood.

Please take some time to explore this website and see all that is involved in the formation of priests for today. Please keep St. Patrick's in your prayers and be assured of our prayers for you.

San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone appointed San Jose Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Daly as interim rector and president at St. Patrick’s Seminary & University, the archdiocese announced Sept. 16.

Bishop Daly is expected to hold the position for up to a year while the Society of St. Sulpice, the traditional administrators of the seminary, work with the seminary board of trustees to search for a permanent president and rector, officials said.

At the same time, Jesuit Father John Piderit, former Loyola University-Chicago president and president of the Catholic Education Institute, was appointed vice president for administration. Father Piderit is a major voice for restoring Catholic identity in Catholic education as president of the Catholic Education Institute. He continues as vicar for finance at the Menlo Park seminary, a position he has held since late 2012.

Sulpician Father Gladstone Stevens will continue as vice rector and dean of men. Basilian Father Anthony Giampietro, appointed in the past few months, is executive vice president for advancement and academic dean.

Bishop Daly “believes that St. Patrick’s can be one of the outstanding seminaries in the United States,” said seminary provost Melanie Morey. As president of Marin Catholic High School from 2003-2011 and Archdiocese of San Francisco vocations director from 2002-2011, Bishop Daly “has a leadership record of growing an institution,” Morey said. “He has a deep and abiding love of vocation education and a great vision for the seminary moving forward,” Morey said.

Bishop Daly, 53, “has been active in generating priestly vocations for many years,” the archdiocese noted in its announcement. Fifteen of the 93 seminarians studying at St. Patrick’s are from the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

Bishop Daly is a graduate of St. Patrick’s and serves on its board of trustees. Bishop Daly, appointed to the San Jose diocese by Pope Benedict XVI in 2011, will continue to serve as vicar for clergy and in the area of Catholic education, the Diocese of San Jose announced.

Bishop Daly’s passion for finding priestly vocations came through whenever he spoke about the topic during his time as vocations director in the San Francisco archdiocese. “Pray for vocations. You can’t build a vocation culture unless you have a culture of prayer,” then-Father Daly said in a 2011 interview with Catholic San Francisco. “Second, have seminarians assist you who have a passion for vocations. Third, don’t get in a numbers game (to inflate the rolls) because one crazy, weird seminary candidate will chase away five normal guys.”

Outgoing rector and president Sulpician Father James McKearney will continue to serve in ministry as a member of the Society of St. Sulpice, the archdiocese said in its announcement.

Born April 30, 1960, in San Francisco, Bishop Daly graduated from Sacred Heart High School, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of San Francisco in 1982; a Master of Divinity degree from St. Patrick’s in 1987; and a Master of Education degree from Boston College in 1996. He was ordained a priest for the San Francisco archdiocese in 1987.
