Father Mark Catalana (July 15 1963-May 2, 2013), a graduate of SPSU and the vocations director for DSJ for many of our SJ seminarians died in the morning, May 2, 2013, of an apparent heart attack, following his recent surgery for injuries sustained in an accident.

Mark Michael Catalana was born in San Jose on July 15, 1963, one of six children of Frank (deceased) and Wanda Catalana.

Bishop-Elect Michael BarberThe St. Patrick's Seminary & University Community congratulates Bishop-Elect  Micael C. Barber who is to be ordained at the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland on May 25, 2013. Before heading to Boston and serving as spiritual director to the house of seminarians at St. John's Seminary, the then Father Barber served as a teacher of systermatic theology and directed the spiritual life programs of St. Patrick's Seminary & University. While serving Catholics in various priestly capacities the Bay Area, Bishop-Elect Barber also served as a chaplain within the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, which provides Catholic pastoral ministries and religious services to members of the U.S. armed forces and their families in 29 countires--with responsiblity for the pastoral care of over 1.8 million Catholics..

Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio who now oversees the Archdiocese for Military Services  has continued to send military men considering a vocation to the priesthood to St. Patrick's Seminary for a discernment retreat each year.

Father John (Jack) Olivier, S.S. beloved professor of St. Joseph's College, Mt. View, California from 1947-1965 and this seminary from 1965-1969, died peacefully at the Sulpician retirement center in Catonsville, Maryland slightly before midnight on April 12, 2013. He was a beloved liturgist, musican, chant director and companion on the spiritual journey to so many both inside and outside the halls of the Seminary. He will be missed both here in the West as well as among the Sulpicians and so many friends in the East.
