On Saturday, September 29, 2012 thirteen seminarians were ordained to the transitional diaconate at St. Pius Church in Redwood City by Archbishop-Elect Salvatore Cordileone. Pictured here is Deacon Michael Syjueco (Diocese of San Jose) receiving the book of the gospels. According to the rite of ordination, the deacon is charged to "believe what he reads, teach what he believes and practice what he teaches." As the thirteen join the ranks of the ordained they do so after years of preparation for this moment. Their theological and priestly formation will culminate in ordination to the priesthood in the spring/summer 2012. May God continue to fill the newly ordained deacons with the will to follow the command of Christ to lay down their lives in imitation of the Master and to love as they have been loved.
