A new painting of the founder of the Sulpicians, Fr. Jean Jacques Olier (1608-1657) has been created by Sulpician Father Peter Gray in Maryland. The painting has been acquired by St. Patrick's Seminary and will go on display in the main administrative hallway of the Seminary. The painting came into the possession of St. Patrick's just recently and will be on display in time for the October canonical visitation of the Superior General of the Society of St. Sulpice (The Very Reverend Ronald D. Witherup, p.s.s.) Fr. Witherup will meet with the President/Rector as well as with the members of the administration, student body and Oblate Sisters of Jesus the Priest. The "canonical visitation" is a routine visitation of the seminary either by the Provincial or the Superior General of the Sulpicians at regularly scheduled intervals in an effort to assist the Sulpician Seminary in its ministry of initial and ongoing formation of Preists for service in the dioceses.

Benemerenti_Award

Dr. Jeffrey M. Burns, adjunct professor at SPSU, permanent deacon in the Diocese of Oakland, as well as archivist and director of the Chancery Archives of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, recently was the     recipient of the Benemerenti Award. Through the efforts of Archbishop George Niederhauer, the honor was granted to Dr. Burns by Pope Benedict XVI for his exemplary service to the Archives of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Dr. Burns is an eminent scholar of the history of Catholicism in California and the United States. SPSU is blessed to have the Archives housed at the seminary and, therefore, the community regularly enjoys Dr. Burns' cordial presence, as well as his experience and effectiveness with the seminarians in the classroom. St. Patrick's wishes a hearty congratulations to Dr. Burns for this prestigious papal acknowledgement.

"Who do you say that I am?"

With these words of Jesus this Sunday, the St. Patrick's Seminary & University warmly welcomes our new seminarians of 2011-2012. It was such a gift to be able to celebrate Mass with you all tonight and with your family and friends.

The fact that Jesus has called you to this holy house of prayer, study and community is a testament to the grace working in your lives. It is not you who chose Him but He who chooses you "to go forth and bear fruit - fruit that will last" (John 15:16) As Jesus tells us all this Sunday the Kingdom belongs to God and His Church, may you find in this seminary the seeds of that Kingdom, pusue it with all your love and strength and find in the members of this house authentic disciples with the same passion for integrity and holiness and then, from that life lived well, for service of the holy poeple of God. Our prayers are with you as you take this important step in your life and the life of the Church.

Fraternally,

Fr. James L. McKearney, S.S. (President & Rector)
