St. Patricks

Sixth graders from St. Christopher School in San Jose, toured the seminary today, starting with morning brunch served by the Oblate Sisters, and ending with a soccer game on the playing fields. There was also time for reflection in midday prayer and benediction and a question and answer session about seminary life. All received Holy Cards.  Pictured here are the students taking in the Chapel artwork.

We thank San Jose Vocations Director, Rev. John Poncini and Parochial Vicar Rev. Anthony Nguyen for organizing the vist--and thank the many seminarians who helped to make this day so successful.

Seminarians, faculty and community members gathered for an evening celebration in advance of St Patrick's Day on Sunday, March 17th.

On this evening, faculty members observed a longstanding tradition of assisting the Oblate Sisters in serving the meal, pouring wine, clearing plates, and cleaning tables. This is a task usually done by seminarians.

Pictured here are Fr. Vincent Doan Bui (wearing white waiter's coat over his clerics) and Rev. Mr. Tom Martin in his  Irish knit sweater worn over clerics.

As white smoke rose over the Vatican,  members of the St Patrick's Community began to cheer, applaud, send text messages, and ring bells across the campus.

We then assembled in the dining hall to watch the televised proceedings and learn for the first time that the Cardinals had electe Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina to become Pope Francis I.

Fr. McKearney led us in prayer just before our lunch break--where we shared thoughts and impressions of this historic moment.

Pictured here are seminarians Brandon Dang (Orange), and Guadalupe Vargas (Fresno) and Raj Derivera (Sacramento) as they first learned the news.

Pope Francis IToday, Wednesday, March 13, 2013 has been made extraordinary by the election of the first Pope from the Americas!

Pope Francis I, formerly Jesuit Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina, humbly accepted the silent blessing of the Church Universal in an extraordinary beginning to his papacy. The Church of San Francisco welcomes our Holy Father who bears, for the first time, the name of the great Francis of Assisi, Patron of our diocese. Holy Father, we congratulate you and pledge our prayerful support and love. Ad multos annos!
