Legatus

On Tuesday evening March 2, 2010 Fr. Jim McKearney and Fr. Jim Myers presented “The Seminary: Initial and Ongoing Formation for Priests” to some 40 members of the Las Vegas chapter of Legatus – an organization of Catholic business professionals who in part claim as their mission “bringing Christ and our faith to the marketplace.” The evening began with a Mass celebrated by newly ordained Fr. John Assalone with Fr. Steve Hoffer (an alumnus of St. Patrick's and priest of the diocese), Fr. McKearney and Father Myers concelebrating.

We have a new deacon and a new priest! On Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 10:30 AM Bishop Richard Garcia ordained two of our seminarians. Fredy Calvario, fourth theology, was ordained a transitional deacon and Rodolfo Contreras was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Monterey. In his homily Bishop Garcia emphasized that all those called to ordained ministry in the Church are to serve the people of God in imitation of the Good Shepherd who laid down his life for his sheep.

On Tuesday February 8, 2010 the community at St. Patrick's will honor the Oblate Sisters of Jesus the Priest. The Oblate Sisters have for many years now been praying for vocations and supporting the seminary and the Vatican II Institute programs. This annual celebration gives the administration, faculty, staff and seminarians an opportunity to thank the Sisters for their presence and ministry.

On Friday, February 5th, people from all around the BayArea gathered at the Leavey Center at Santa Clara University to cheer for their favorite priests and seminarians.  After a prayer led by Bishop Patrick McGrath, the 4th annual Revs vs. Sems began with the crowd cheering, “Go Sems!  Go Revs!”  The Revs dominated the game early on and never looked back.

On January 23rd, Seminarians from the west (Saint John, Camarillo, Saint John Vianney, Denver, Mount Angel, St. Benedict, Oregon, and  Saint Patrick’s, Menlo Park) marched together for the Walk for Life West Coast.  Together with a dedicated group from St. Patrick’s, we were able to host the guest seminarians. The guests arrived on Friday evening and after receiving a warm welcome from our president and rector, Fr. James McKearney, S.S., the seminarians joined together for dinner and Evening Prayer.  It was a powerful experience for all of us that resulted in fellowship, fraternity and a renewed committment to the Church's stance on the dignity of the human person. Saturday morning began with Mass at the cathedral with the Archbishop. The photograph of the group above was taken moments after the Mass.

Many thanks go out to all the men who came to the discernment retreat 2010. Hopefully, you were moved in some way to further consider your call to the priesthood sparked by the guidance of Sister Kathleen Bryant, RSC our retreat director, the encouraging words of Archbishop Niederauer  and also with the words of the many speakers and panelists. Many, many thanks go out to Andrew Spyrow, our seminarian coordinator from the Archdiocese of San Francisco and to all of his brother seminarians who contributed in various ways with hospitality, tours and one-on-one conversations with individual retreatants. Thanks also to Fr. Vincent Bui the Dean of Students of the Seminary for the coordination of the retreat and for his presence throughout the weekend. In this Year for Priests may Jesus, the High Priest, grant us all the grace to be faithful to follow him wherever he leads. (Revelation 14:4; John 12:26)
