During his visit he met with President/Rector Fr. James McKearney and with several staff members in order to get a first-hand sense of St. Patrick's this year. Archbishop Vlazy has an illustrious career as a priest, administrator, bishop and archbishop. His responsibilities within the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops have been many including the committies for vocations and priestly formation. Our own Archbishop George Niederauer has served as chairman for the USCCB committee for priestly formation - the committee that gave the Church in America the fifth edition of the Program for Priestly Formation.
Mount Angel Seminary in St. Benedict, Oregon is the seminary of the Archdiocese but to the benefit of the Archdiocese, several men from Portland have been sent to St. Patrick's for their priestly formation. Archbishop Vlazny celebrated Mass in the main chapel on the Feast of the Annuciation. In his homily, quoting a favorite saying and speaking of Mary's "yes" to the Lord's will for her life, the Archbishop said "Happiness is not getting what you want but rather, wanting what you get." He said further, that Mary is an excellent model for us who are priests and leaders in the Church who need to be open to what the Lord has in mind for us.
